WOW Podcast #56 with LuFisto
Episode 56 with LuFisto
On April 6th at the iPPV broadcast of SHIMMER Vol 53, Montreal’s “Super Hardcore Anime” LuFisto crashed out on a moonsault to the floor during her match – a landing which caused what is medically referred to as an “exploded kneecap”. Now, a month (and a surgery) later, LuFisto talks exclusively to the Women of Wrestling Podcast, and updates us on her current status. LuFi takes us back to that fateful afternoon and gives us a blow by blow account what happened in the ring, the immediate aftermath in the back and the days following. She’s also got an update on the injury status of her pupil Kalamity, who feared she had broken her foot in training in the last week. We talk about some of the things that she missed out on because of her injury, including SHIMMER the following weekend, her WSU World Title shot at Jessicka Havok and her being stripped of the NSPW Title. We talk rehab – including the part BonRoxx Fitness is playing in helping her get back to her best – and estimate her return date. We talk her experiences in AAA, her admiration for Konnan and her future in that company; her feud with Mercedes Martinez in WSU & NCW:FF; facing Saraya Knight and Jazz; taking on Ivelisse in SHINE and ambitions to face Tara some day. We also revisit the comments made by Al Snow following her Gut Check for TNA and her current feelings on the Gut Check Challenge voting, and there’s quite a deep discussion on LuFisto’s ever-changing relationship with the business, what it means to have “succeeded” in wrestling, and bring up the prospect of retirement. It’s a pretty exhaustive hour and a half with an awesome lady. Download, spread the word and enjoy.

WOW Podcast #52 with AIW’s John Thorne
Episode 52 with AIW Promoter John Thorne
This Friday, Absolute Intense Wrestling brings their Girls Night Out franchise to iPPV via Smart Mark Video – so we’ve invited one of the AIW owner/promoters John Thorne onto the show to explain exactly why you should consider paying $14.99 of your hard earned cash on the show. We talk preparations for the show on the final week, Taylor Made‘s late pull-out and the addition of Addy Starr, the idea of iPPV (and whose idea it was) and the financial state of the company. We go back to the early days of GNO and talk about how important Hailey Hatred was to getting the first show off the ground, favourite shows so far, and how they’ve improved through each event. We talk the current status of former AIW Women’s Champions Mickie Knuckles and Jessicka Havok, touch on an AIW Women’s Champion who never was, and the 2012 ascent of Allysin Kay and Mia Yim to the main event – including the amazing finish to their Steel Cage match last August. We discuss the Indiegogo campaign to get Athena to GNO 7 last year, and John offers his opinion on some of the WSU/Drew Cordeiro twitter-drama from last week, and touches on an aborted GNO/WSU invasion/merger angle. We talk Allysin Kay’s mystery opponent for Friday (and maybe get a hint…), the formation of The Social Network and help give the final push for the iPPV on Friday. Some really interesting insight here from someone who was anything but a women’s wrestling fan a few years ago.

WOW Podcast #51 with Serena Deeb
Episode 51 with Serena Deeb
Last week, Serena Deeb was announced as returning to the ring after an eighteen month injury hiatus following a severe concussion suffered on SHIMMER Vol 44 – which begs a number of questions; questions that we aim to ask on this podcast. Get the full rundown on her decision to return to the ring, how close she was to returning last Fall, and how attending a show a couple of weeks ago helped convince her to get back in the ring. We talk about what she’s been up to for the last year and a half, including Yoga and DVD box-sets, how much she’s kept in contact with both the wrestling business and the people in it, and discuss what exactly happened when she was arrested last July 4th. We also touch on Davina Rose‘s signing with WWE, and nail down whether this is a temporary or a permanent comeback, and talk future plans. Plus, before the 40 minutes with the Deebious One, Stew & Lee spend 20 minutes running down what to expect in the next couple of months – from SHINE to EVE, Bellatrix to SHIMMER and AIW to NCW: Femmes Fatales. Oh, and just what is happening with Kaitlyn for WrestleMania? We ponder the imponderable, here on the Women of Wrestling Podcast.

WOW Podcast #50 with Lexie Fyfe
Episode 50 with Lexie Fyfe
Remember that time Lexie Fyfe made her return to the ring on SHIMMER Vol 50? Well, here she makes her return to the WOW Podcast to celebrate our fiftieth offering too. Lexie’s been all over the world and done so much, it was only fitting that we had her on for a full length show. We talk about her return to the ring at SHIMMER 50, how much convincing she took and how nervous she was before the match – and also about her role in the SHIMMER set up, watching matches and offering feedback to the wrestlers. Of course, she’s also heavily involved in SHINE in Florida, so we talk about how that all came together, how the first half-year has been, and discuss a number of SHINE talents, including Made In Sin, Kimberly, Reby Sky and more. Lexie tells us about what an important part Matt Hardy had to play in her early career, along with Malia Hosaka. She recalls working a 30 date military base tour with Wendi Richter (aka “the stiffest person I’ve ever worked, man or woman”), and her brief flirtations with both WWF and WCW in the late 90s (including an example of a WCW idea that never went anywhere – shocking, right?). We also talk about her cameo on Monday Night Raw as Hillary Clinton, working the UK ‘Revival’ show in 2002 vs Nikita and her work producing customs with SlamminLadies.com (including how the cops got called to her house recently). Almost an hour and a half of audio goodness. Thanks so much for your continued support, and here’s to the next 50!

WOW Podcast Xmas Special (#49) with SHIMMER’s Dave Prazak, WSU’s Drew Cordeiro & NCW:Femmes Fatales’ Stephane Bruyere

Episode 49 with SHIMMER’s Dave Prazak, WSU’s Drew Cordeiro & NCW:Femmes Fatales’ Stephane Bruyere
Happy holidays everybody, and we’re celebrating by trying something brand new for us on the WOW Podcast, as we’re visited by the Three Wise Men of women’s wrestling. We’ve had many multiple guest shows before, but never have we had them all on the line at the same time, roundtable style. We welcome SHIMMER’s Dave Prazak, WSU’s Drew Cordeiro & NCW:FF’s Stephane Bruyere to discuss their year in wrestling. How was 2012 for them and their promotion? We discuss the exodus of female talent from the “Big Two” and whether the revolving door at WWE/TNA will have an effect on the independent scene. We talk about opening dialogue between promoters (and this is legitimately the first time Dave Prazak & Drew Cordeiro have *ever* spoken to each other) and thoughts/plans for iPPV going forward with all three companies. All of the Ringbelles picks for our 2012 awards are discussed, along with other performers who either have had a standout year, or are ones to watch going into 2013. Speaking of 2013, we have loads of news on the upcoming shows for all three promotions – Drew gives the lowdown on WSU’s “An Ultraviolent Affair” in February, Stephane unleashes a tasty triple main event for Femmes Fatales XI in March, and Dave makes three new talent announcements for SHIMMER vol 53 at the WrestleCon event on WrestleMania weekend. Oh, not only that, but there’s a tease on a current WSU talent that may well debut in SHIMMER in 2013, and you may want to keep listening after the outro music for a special Christmas song from one of our guests… It’s damn near an hour and a half of Christmas cheer! Enjoy~!

WOW Podcast #48 with Amazing Kong
Episode 48 with Amazing Kong
Few people have elicited the intense speculation and column inches as much as our guest on this edition of the Podcast – and as such we are very pleased to welcome back Amazing Kong, who recently returned to the ring at SHINE 5 following her WWE run. So it’s time to dissect the last couple of years and get to the truth of a lot of speculation and rumours. We talk getting back in the ring at SHINE and Florida Underground (both teaming with Jazz) a couple of weekends ago and how that return came about. We talk endorsements from Jim Ross and Steve Austin leading to meetings with John Laurinatis leading to her dream job. Is it fair to call her a Triple H Project? We talk the first meeting with Vince McMahon, and the Kharma name (and more to the point, discover a rejected alternate name!), and what the initial plans were for her push. We talk acceptance into the Diva locker room, and the reaction to her pregnancy. Seen her wrestling ring-shaped engagement ring? Now hear the *true* story of how her fiancé popped the question. Stew and Kong compare how many Royal Rumbles each of them have been in, and we talk about the great personal tragedy in Kong’s life around that time and how various things contributed to her eventual WWE release. We discuss the oft-reported story that Layla was a last minute replacement for Kharma at Extreme Rules 2012 and how aware she was of the growing interest in a match with Beth Phoenix. From there it’s a discussion of future plans both at home and abroad to wrap up the episode. A pleasure to have Kong back on the show.

WOW Podcast #46 with “Rate Tank” Kellie Skater
Episode 46 with Kellie Skater
We’ve been meaning to get Kellie Skater back on the Podcast for some time, and with PWWA‘s next show coming up very soon and her being announced as returning to SHIMMER in October, what better time? This will be her eighth trip over for SHIMMER, and we talk favourite memories of her stateside adventures so far, and future plans in SHIMMER. We discuss her three month Japanese trip from earlier in the year in great detail, including Christmas in Japan, training, friendships, drinking, networking, drinking, getting kicked in the face and more drinking – and we get a crash course in conversational Japanese (and swear words). We also talk Australia, and recent goings on Down Under, including the recent interim PWWA Title tournament – and Skater calls out her preferred opponent for PWWA on October 6th. Plus more!

All female wrestling shows are popping up all over the place, and with Scotland about to enter that game with ICW: Fierce Females on September 30th, what better time to welcome Scotland’s “Dynamite Queen” Nikki Storm to the show? She’s got a lot to talk about, including her ICW persona of Ms. Nicola Storm and an overview of the diverse Scottish scene going into Fierce Females. Did you know Nikki Storm used to cheerlead? In Glasgow, no less. She’ll tell you about that, and how she went from dancer to wrestler… to her early appearances in the over 18s Triple X Wrestling in Coventry, and how influential Jetta and Saraya Knight were in guiding her early years in the ring. We take a chance to go through the spotlighted matches she’s had in EVE, including with Saraya, Tsukasa Fujimoto, Hikaru Shida, Kay Lee Ray and Kat Waters as we await EVE’s WrestleFever event on Nov 10th, when she will face Alpha Female for the EVE Championship. WOW Podcast #44 with Allysin Kay
Episode 44 with Allysin Kay
The Women of Wrestling Podcast returns with the third and final member of the fearsome Midwest Militia, Allysin Kay. Kay has had a breakout year in 2012, thanks in large part to her exploits in AIW, where she started the year with a broken nose, came back to win their women’s title, and next weekend will conclude the trilogy as she defends her title in a Cage Match against the woman who broke her nose – Mia Yim. Also, fresh off Shine Wrestling‘s iPPV debut last weekend, Kay talks about tagging up with Taylor Made, and the classic tag team that inspires her work. We talk her early wrestling fandom and her initial favourites, her fantastic and distinctive tattoo, meeting and working with Jessicka Havok, thoughts on the future of WSU under new management, working NCW Femmes Fatales last month and being already announced for SHIMMER this October, accents, twitter, craziness and more. A lot of fun.

WOW Podcast #43 with Saraya Knight
Episode 43 with Saraya Knight
Saraya Knight continues her fantastic year with a record-breaking third appearance on the Podcast – and what an opportune time it is to talk to the SHIMMER Champion. As well as discussing *that* weekend in March, Saraya gives us the lowdown on the Channel 4 documentary airing on her family this week (Wednesday, 10pm) – including being very frank on some issues she has with the first cut of the show. We talk her daughter Raya, now wrestling as Paige in FCW and Saraya gives a real mother’s view of how that separation has affected both her and her daughter. We talk about her upcoming debut for NCW: Femmes Fatales in Montreal in November (and even possibly further afield), exclusive news on a rather unique charity calendar from WAWW (which may have resulted in the creation of a new word), and discuss Saraya’s recent fight with a punter at an All Star show in Croydon. Then it’s back into Saraya’s bag o’ stories for recollections of a sledgehammer showdown in Camberley and some very unexpected medical news about 20 years ago…

It’s a double guest extravaganza here at the WOW Podcast as we welcome the current Pro-Wrestling EVE Champion Alpha Female to the show prior to her headlining EVE’s forthcoming “Special Edition” show on July 14th. Episode 41 – Sensational Sherri (February 8, 1958 – June 15, 2007)
featuring Bill Apter, Candi Divine, Marianne Ryan, Lexie Fyfe & “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase
Five years ago today, the wrestling world became a little less Sensational as Sherri Martel passed away at the altogether too young age of 49 years old. On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of her passing, we decided to try and pay tribute to this most memorable of performers by gathering together some of her friends and colleagues to share their experiences and memories. On this very special podcast you’ll hear legendary wrestling journalist Bill Apter, who knew Sherri throughout her entire professional career; friend and rival (and multiple time former AWA Women’s Champion) Candi Divine; non-wrestler friend, confidante and travelling companion Marianne Ryan; veteran wrestler Lexie Fyfe and one of Sherri’s most famous managerial charges, Ted DiBiase – a Hall of Famer in his own right, and the man who inducted Sherri into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006. A big thanks to all our guests and those people who helped make the show possible. You know who you are.

WOW Podcast #40 with Lisa “Ivory” Moretti, Part Two

Episode 40 with Lisa “Ivory” Moretti, Part Two
A week ago we talked to the lovely Lisa Moretti, aka Ivory – and we left her on the verge of heading off to Los Angeles to attend the LA premiere of GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. A week on, it’s time for another chat to discuss how the premiere went, what she thought of the documentary, and who showed up. From there, it’s time for a headlong dive into the massive second part of Lisa’s wrestling career, as Ivory in WWE. We talk how she got into the promotion, her ho psychology, getting up to speed after so many years away from the business… and just WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT PURPLE SCARF?? We talk working with The Fabulous Moolah & Mae Young, the horrendous Armageddon ’99 Evening Gown Swimming Pool match, Miss Kitty as a locker room poison, the Right to Censor and her program with Chyna, and Steve Austin‘s opinion on their WrestleMania match. Lisa also discusses Stacy Keibler & Torrie Wilson (and deviating from the script), Fit Finlay and the evolution of the Divas division and the end of her road with the company. Once again, an absolute pleasure and a class act. Enjoy.

Episode 39 with Lisa “Ivory” Moretti, Part One
It’s the first time we’ve spread a single guest over two WOW Podcasts, but when that guest is a three time former WWE Women’s Champion, it’s quite understandable. The former Ivory, Lisa Moretti, joins us on just before she sets off to the Los Angeles premiere of “GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” to discuss the documentary and her time as Tina Ferrari, the fact the GLOW fanbase still exists after over 20 years, training as a raw rookie with Mando Guerrero vs training raw rookies herself on Tough Enough, bimbos in wrestling, creative freedom at GLOW, a live performance of her RAP(!), transferring from GLOW to POWW, earning respect of the “real” wrestlers, being honoured at Cauliflower Alley this year, who she would have had to kill if she’d seen her and STANDING UP RICKY STEAMBOAT for a poolside vodka! We’ll talk to Lisa again next week where she’ll report on her experiences at the LA premiere, and we’ll talk about her WWE run in depth! Look, it’s Lisa Moretti – her enthusiasm is infectious. WOW Podcast #38 with Little Egypt

Episode 38 with Angelina “Little Egypt” Altishin
A very special edition of the Podcast this time out, as we welcome original GLOW girl Little Egypt (aka Angelina Altishin) to the show on the eve of the World Premiere of “GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” later this month in Canada. She was very instrumental in bringing back the various cast members of the 80s GLOW product for the documentary, and she talks about how it all came together, a taster of what we can expect in the movie, and the place of GLOW in wrestling history. We take a chance to ask Angelina all about how she got involved with GLOW back in the day, clarify exactly what Jackie Stallone did for the product, and discuss the ethos behind the show. We also touch on attempts to restart a GLOW themed project, such as Wrestlicious, and consider just why they haven’t worked. Angelina is also heavily involved in the Cauliflower Alley Club, which has its annual reunion next week – not only will former GLOW star Tina Ferrari (aka Lisa “Ivory” Moretti) be honoured, but Angelina will present two seminars for attendees, both of which are touched on here. Firstly, the importance of social media and how to use it to further your brand, and secondly, how to deal with moving out of the wrestling business, and which transferable skills a pro-wrestler has that can be successfully used in the real world. A fascinating discussion with an intelligent woman that has something for both fans and those already in the industry. Enjoy.

WOW Podcast #37 with Mickie Knuckles

Episode 37 with Mickie Knuckles
When we received a message letting us know that Mickie Knuckles was looking to speak to Ringbelles’ Women Of Wrestling Podcast to make a special announcement, we leapt at the chance. After all, the former NWA Midwest/IWA: Mid South and Ohio Valley Wrestling Women’s Champion, and current Absolute Intense Wrestling Women’s titleholder was someone who we had been looking to speak to for some time now. Before getting to her big news, we were able to discuss the key points of Mickie’s career, including her time in IWA: MS, getting knocked out in her first ever match, and being part of the women’s division that would be the blueprint for SHIMMER. She also covers getting into wrestling death matches, and offers her thoughts on two women who debuted at Queen of the Death Matches tournaments – Rachel Summerlyn and the infamous BB Walls. From there, we look at her frenetic summer of 2008, including appearing on Jerry Springer, TNA, Mike Levy and breaking her leg in two. Finally, Mickie explains how she got back into wrestling, the Izza Belle Smothers character, and also has some very pointed words about OVW and Jessicka Havok before making the announcement that affects Girls Night Out 6 on April 15. This is an edition that you don’t want to miss.

Coming off a 2011 which saw her pick up awards galore (including our Breakout Star of the Year), noted “Magnificent Beast” Jessicka Havok is heading into the biggest match in her life on March 3rd on iPPV against Mercedes Martinez… so what better time than to cut through the crap and get to know the real J-Hav? We discuss her recent training regime, and the various looks she’s had since her start in the business and how she got involved in the first place. We talk about two vastly different experiences of working former WWE wrestlers Ivory & Luna Vachon early in her career, never-before-asked questions about the formation (and dissolution) of her team with Hailey Hatred, her career to date in WSU, the addition of Allysin Kay & Sassy Stephie to become the Midwest Militia, thoughts on Maria Kanellis and Crossfire Entertainment, AIW (along with some candid thoughts on Mickie Knuckles), opinions on whether Femmes Fatales & SHIMMER are in her future, last year’s controversial War Games match and the final build to the match with Mercedes. We also talk about her training at the ROH/SHIMMER School, her outings at AIW, Beyond Wrestling & SHIMMER, her T-shirt on BarberShopWindow.com and her new gig as ROH’s new locker room correspondent. Then we welcome Ontario’s Cherry Bomb (on the back of a successful campaign, no less) to talk how she got involved in pro-wrestling, coming back from a nasty injury, her WWE dream and tryout, nearly committing homicide on Veda at AIW, touring Japan, playing an evil version of herself in forthcoming movie “Beat Down”, and dressing up Hulk Hogan in a Godzilla hoodie. “You know, at one time, Mark Chapman was a huge John Lennon fan.” – Jerry Lawler, WrestleMania 22
That line of commentary from “The King” sums up one of the best female feuds in WWE history – the “Obsession” angle between then WWE Women’s Champion Trish Stratus and her stalker fan Mickie James. From October 2005 through April 2006, Alex Greenfield was the producer of all the angles/promos in the feud, and in this unique episode of the Podcast, he guides us through the twists, turns, shrines and kisses of the angle from conception to (injury hastened) completion. Find out the inspiration for the feud and how it changed organically as it got over, who came up with various parts of the angle, and personal opinions on all the major story beats of the story. Not only that, before the Mickie vs Trish stuff, we talk about the return of Kharma last weekend at the Royal Rumble and consider where she’s going on the Road to WrestleMania, and how that ties in to one Beth Phoenix.
