Episode 53 with ‘The Wrestling Goddess’ Athena

Here’s one we’ve been meaning to do for some time – and we’ve finally got our schedules aligned in time to bring it to you just before SHIMMER Vol 53 on iPPV next weekend, where our guest Athena will be in one of the featured matches against Ayako Hamada. In this wide ranging interview, we talk about how the various parts of her act came together – including how she started, was ripped off, clotheslined, yet still came back for more; we find out where the name came from, how the spectacular O-Face came to be, and the origin of “Hussy”. We talk run-ins with various former (and future) WWE wrestlers, early awesomeness with Booker T & Sharmell, thoughts on ACW, Rachel Summerlyn, Death Matches and Intergender wrestling (Brock Lesnar vs Kim Kardashian anybody?). We talk SHIMMER, Femmes Fatales, WSU – and then out of nowhere break open the Wrestling Bucket List~!, where Athena runs through the people she wants to wrestle before she retires. Some serious, some personal, some… a little out there! We finish up talking about making it to the big time, and the craziness that has been the TNA Gut Check voting. A bit of an epic podcast, this… but this girl can talk!

Ringbelles Retro: Sunny doesn’t shine

The following is a direct quote from one of Tammy Lynn Sytch‘s shoot interviews from the last decade, concerning her opinion on women wrestling:

Honestly, I hate women wrestling. I hate the actual in-ring women wrestling. It’s stupid; I was never a fan of women’s wrestling – not GLOW, not anything, you know? Anytime a girl had to get in there and wrestle I’m like ‘leave it to the guys’… it’s bad when you have girls that do more than the guys – it kind of brings the guys down a little bit. You do have some great girls out there but I was never a fan of women wrestling.

Surprising then, that she would accept bookings for Women Superstars Uncensored in 2007, considering it is an all-women’s promotion (Rick Cataldo aside). Doubly so when you consider that she won the WSU Championship by beating Alicia

However, there may be another reason why Sytch isn’t keen on women’s wrestling and prefers when they remain as managers/valets/interference runners – she’s not very good at wrestling. (more…)

Melina’s doomed

Anyone see Raw this week? I mean besides the awesome stuff with CM Punk? I mean, the Divas match in particular between Kelly Kelly and Melina, with a post-match beatdown by the Bella Twins on Kelly and Eve Torres? Anyone see how Melina joined in with the beatdown? No?

That’s because it didn’t happen. The two-time Divas Champion and three-time Women’s Champion was left in the shadows after being defeated in 100 seconds by Kelly, having only got in three moves, and two of those were kicks. It could be claimed that the match was short – so short that Melina was introduced in the ring and din’t even get to do her signature entrance with the paparazzi and the splits – because the show was overrunning. Some would say it’s a big push for Kelly, given that she is the Divas Champ right now, and that she has a title defence this weekend on the Money in the Bank pay-per-view against Brie Bella - and that’s all true. However, Kelly could have beaten any number of women on the Raw roster in what was effectively a squash match – Maryse would have been perfect for that role. It is telling that WWE chose to send out Melina – its former golden girl, the woman who was the figurehead of the division for years and the woman who has seemingly been in the Diva doghouse for all of 2011 – to lie down… (more…)

WOW Podcast #24 with Rachel Summerlyn & Jessica James

Episode 24 with Rachel Summerlyn & Jessica James

This weekend, Anarchy Championship Wrestling presents its third annual American Joshi Queen of Queens Tournament, featuring some of the best indy talent from around the USA. To celebrate that, we decided to have an Anarchy themed show featuring the bacon *and* the eggs from Rachel & Jessica’s Excellent Tag TeamRachel Summerlyn & Jessica James. We’re joined first by Jessica for a thoroughly enthralling chat about her career to date. Jessica admits she’s barely on the internet, so she’s one of those wrestlers that there isn’t that much about online. Hear stories about training with Booker T and Sharmell at PWA (and how that compares to Booker’s appearance on Tough Enough), the history and development of Lady Poison, Texas indies, ninja sneaking skills and just how close she is to Rachel. Then it’s Rachel‘s time to specifically plug the Queen of Queens tournament, including what we need to know about lesser known names Amanda Fox and Lillie Mae. We take the chance to ask Rachel about her own debut (in a tournament, no less, at the 2006 Queen of the Death Matches), life lessons learned from Daffney, how she and Jessica came together, her weight loss, Anarchy Championship Wrestling as a whole (ranging from prom nights to thumbtack matches), eliciting emotion in wrestling, future goals and more.

Keep an eye on the website this weekend for coverage of the 2011 American Joshi Queen of Queens!!

Ringbelles Retro: Inside The Power Plant

Bret Hart blamed it for not teaching Bill Goldberg to protect whoever he’s in the ring with, it had an 85% dropout rate, and it’s head trainer made a documentary maker throw up just to prove a point, but on this week’s Retro, we take a look at the Women Of WCW training at the Power Plant in Atlanta.
