SHIMMER volumes 65-66 live results

shimmer logo

We’re back for a second day of DVD tapings for SHIMMER, with questions being raised about LuFisto‘s current intentions. After being denied another chance at the SHIMMER title in the near future while Cheerleader Melissa still holds the belt, she came out to try to help Yumi Ohka win the strap in the main event of volume 64, but was rebuffed for her actions. The pair came to blows after Melissa retained the championship, leading to LuFisto and Ohka meeting as part of the volume 65 card today.

Elsewhere, Melissa defends the title against Mia Yim following Yim’s wins over Hikaru Shida and Mercedes Martinez, while Shida and Martinez will face off in a first-time ever match. Following her walking out of their tag team match yesterday, Veda Scott will wrestle Leva Bates in a rematch from volume 62, but with more hostile feelings abound.

Meanwhile in tag team action, Kimber Lee and Cherry Bomb square off against Ray and Leon, while Kellie Skater and Tomoka Nakagawa defend the Tag Team Championship against Saraya Knight and Rhia O’Reilly.

As with yesterday, we will have ongoing results after the jump courtesy of the Twitters of Reid Allen and Dave Muscarella, so keep refreshing to get the updates as they happen. (more…)

SHIMMER volumes 63-64 live results

SHIMMER neon logo

The bumper weekend of DVD tapings that is SHIMMER is upon us with more than 30 of the world’s top female talent descending on the Eagles Club in Berwyn, IL for what will be around 40 matches over the next two days.

Following the controversial ending of SHIMMER 62 last week in New Orleans, LA, LuFisto will team up with tag partner Kana to take on Mercedes Martinez and SHIMMER Champion Cheerleader Melissa, looking to get some revenge following her loss in her title challenge, and to possibly secure another crack at the championship at some point over the weekend.

Elsewhere, we may see friction within the Canadian Ninjas following Nicole Matthews‘ decision to team with Madison Eagles to unsuccessfully challenge the Global Green Gangsters for the Tag Team Championship last week – a move which raised the hackles of Portia Perez, who tweeted her displeasure at the development.

You can read more about what we could see over the next four DVD tapings by looking at this week’s Roundup, but we will also be bringing you live results courtesy of the Twitters of Reid Allen and Dave Muscarella, who we thank for their constant great work in getting the word out to the rest of us – and Stew will be back after the tapings for some in-depth thoughts. Absolute Intense Wrestling Girls Night Out 11 & 12 live results – Athena Wins AIW Women’s Championship

Athena AIW Champion by Dave MuscarellaSpring’s Female Fight Season kicks off in Cleveland, OH today with Absolute Intense Wrestling‘s Girls Night Out 11 & 12 tapings. The first show is headlined with a match which should clear up the controversy over the Women’s Championship, as Allysin Kay and Leah Von Dutch square off.

Von Dutch claims that she is the rightful titleholder after beating Kay in controversial circumstances back in February, with an announcement made that the pair will square off at GNO11. Since then, a ruling has been made that Kay is still the reigning Women’s Champion and Von Dutch’s title win did not happen. However, Leah is undefeated in AIW action and holds a win in some fashion over the titleholder, though Allysin will be taking on her adversary without being fatigued from an earlier match – so this is certainly an intriguing contest.

Elsewhere, Kay Lee Ray makes her US debut taking on Mickie Knuckles, Thunderkitty returns to the promotion after a year and a half with a match against Marti Belle – and she discussed her comeback here – and Annie Social & Heidi Lovelace will challenge the Jollyville Fuck-Its for the Tag Team Championship. Unfortunately, Shanna will not be part of the tapings after having to pull out for personal reasons – she was meant to face Veda Scott and Hania in singles matches.

We’ll have results as they happen courtesy of Dave Muscarella in attendance, so click the jump and keep hitting refresh for the latest. (more…)

Surely not!!

Stew’s 2013 highlights

P1010060The first thing I think when I look back over my own personal memories of the last year of women’s wrestling is, as usual, my regular trips to SHIMMER live events in Berwyn, IL. I can’t say enough about the whole experience, but if you’ve ever even vaguely considered making the pilgrimage, DO IT. I believe this year represented my tenth and eleventh trips there, and yeah, I’m still keen to return in the coming year and still love the whole experience. Dave Prazak has often described SHIMMER as a DVD product (and it basically still is), but for me, (and I think a lot of the people I see returning time and time again), it’s become live product more than anything else, and it’s like getting together with your friends from all over the world twice a year. They’re long weekends for the fans, but they’ve ultimately given me such great memories. From seeing the return from injuries of the likes of Serena Deeb & Madison Eagles, to seeing people like Kimber Lee wrestling live for the first time, to seeing Nikki Storm get over so huge on her first trip there, to openly weeping in public as Allison Danger wrestled her last match – all things that will live long in the memory. Sure, the October taping was beset by a number of integral people missing for various reasons, but I’m still glad I was there (Kimber Bombs!!), and only underlines how much talent there is to return in 2014. Layne's Brain
LAYNE’S BRAIN #2 with Angelus Layne, featuring Alex Castle
Angelus Layne is back with another slice of audio for your consideration. Back in Episode #1, Angelus was talking about her then upcoming return match at VWAA against Jordynne Grace. Find out about how that went (clue: not great), and find out what happens next on the road back. As well as recounting other recent adventures in wrestling, Angelus also has some thoughts to share about some of the email correspondence she’s received from “fans” – and is joined by her first podcast guest (and fiancé), Alex Castle, who gives some feedback on her VWAA match and shares his thoughts on living with some of Angelus’ health issues over the last few months. As usual, feedback is both appreciated and encouraged. Enjoy!

Ringbelles Roundup (26 November 2013) – Layla’s fortunes, Sherri Martel & more

This is Layla. Just in case you'd forgotten what she looked like.I was stunned watching the Divas Survivor Series match. It’s not because of the state of the match, but just that I didn’t know that WWE had 14 women on its main roster. Well technically, it’s 15, but one of them has been missing in action since September 23.

The last time anyone saw Layla on WWE TV was part of a 10 woman tag team match on Raw where she, AJ Lee, Aksana, Alicia Fox and Tamina Snuka lost to the Bella Twins, the Funkadactyls and Natalya. It had been a rotten 6 weeks for the former WWE Women’s and Divas Champion, as her heel turn had been so laughably limp that it left her with absolutely no momentum. Her push accelerated like a dog on a rug, and then stopped abruptly.

Layla’s turn came after she turned on Kaitlyn during the NXT Season 3 winner’s title challenge against AJ after inexplicably accompanying her for months before. It was never explained why she was with Kaitlyn in the first place, nor why she turned or why she took so long considering Kaitlyn had received a number of title matches before. After turning, she skipped away with AJ, got a win over her former buddy on Raw and was victorious again in a tag match on SmackDown – and then she started losing… often. By the point she disappeared from the scene, her star had never been lower, and it took a while before anyone really noticed she was gone. (more…)

If you’ve listened to our her two audio appearances on the site this year (June & October) you’ll know the story of how her promising start to 2013 was curtailed with some pretty serious health issues – namely Post Concussion Syndrome – leading to her cancelling her bookings for the last few months of the year. Then, out of nowhere the news comes through that Angelus is cleared to wrestle and is facing Jordynne Grace in an actual wrestling match at VWAA *this weekend* in Addison, IL. Uhhh… what?? Let Angelus take you through the latest happenings in her life as she starts her comeback from PCS on her new podcast series exclusively here on Ringbelles. Ringbelles Roundup (19 November 2013) – Mickie James talks WWE, Blossom Twins future & more

Mickie James Bayley WWEIn last week’s Roundup, we had a note about Mickie James spending a week at WWE’s Performance Center in Orlando, FL working with the developmental Divas. At the time, we kept it a bit muted as that was all the information that we had, and if WWE or Mickie wasn’t going to divulge any details that would be all we would know – that she was there and that was it. As it turns out, WWE.com made more of a deal about it than we thought, as they conducted a full interview with the former WWE Women’s and Divas Champion.

As well as asking about her favourite WWE moments – the usual ones were there like her match with Trish Stratus at WrestleMania 22 and her matches with Beth Phoenix, though she curiously also pointed out the Piggie James angle which I thought was a particular low point in recent Diva history though she spun it to say it brought the issue of bullying to the fore – but she also discussed how she ended up at WWE’s new facility in the first place. Fight Like A Girl: Angelus Layne on Post Concussion Syndrome

Angelus Layne

It’s not even four months since we last spoke to Angelus Layne for an edition of Fight Like A Girl here at Ringbelles, but things are quite different now than they were in June. Just under a month ago, Angelus announced that she was going to be out of wrestling for the rest of the year, having been diagnosed as suffering from Post Concussion Syndrome. The (eventual) decision to listen to her Doctor and her body meant she had to withdraw from all her bookings for the rest of 2013, which would’ve included being part of last weekend’s AIW Girls Night Out 9 & 10 shows, amongst other things. Stew reconnected with Angelus to get the lowdown on her injury, and ended up getting a truly eye-opening and at times quite shocking account of concussions, seizures, blackouts and more. We talk wrestler stubbornness, the people who helped her see sense, her prognosis for recovery and her daily life during her ongoing recovery. An important educational listen for both wrestlers and fans.

Ringbelles Roundup (17 September 2013) – Courtney Rush speaks on her injury, rejigged matches, Total Divas finale

Courtney RushThere is never a good time to sustain an injury – but for Courtney Rush, the timing of her current ailment has to feel horrendous for her.

Tweeting yesterday, she said: “I don’t know how to say this so I’ll just spit it out: last night I broke my collarbone & will be out of wrestling for the rest of the year. The past 24 hours have been the most frustrating and heartbreaking I have experienced in a very long time. But I must remain positive. A thousand thanks to those who showed such compassion and love and did everything to help me through the pain and emotion. I love you all.”

Speaking exclusively to Ringbelles, Rush revealed that the injury happened in a “freak accident” while she wrestled under a mask as La Tigre Diablo against Jasmine in the warm up match at Sunday’s Smash Wrestling CanUSA Classic show in Toronto, ON, Canada – explaining why she did not feature on the show in her announced match against Candice LeRae. While the fractured collarbone is a massive blow, it also means a lot of Courtney’s plans for the next month or so are out of the window. (more…)

WOW Podcast #58 with Allison Danger

WOW Allison Danger 2013

Episode 58 with Allison Danger

Our first ever podcast guest Allison Danger returns for the latest edition of the Podcast, and it’s in the wake of her retirement earlier this year – a retirement that was punctuated by the news that she’d suffered a stroke in January and subsequently had discovered lesions on her brain. About three months after her emotional sendoff, we caught up with Danger to find out the full story on her health issues, how it all went down, when she found out about it and how it’s affecting her everyday life. Some pretty heavy stuff. We discuss whether the stroke was caused by wrestling, discuss her matches on that last weekend and why young wrestlers need to work smarter to avoid the problems she’s facing. Speaking of young wrestlers, we discuss several of Danger’s tips for the future, and how she’s most happy when she can help mould a young talent. We discuss family matters, Danger explains why all talent can’t (and shouldn’t) be booked everywhere and how the age of instant gratification means that some fans just can’t see the big picture. Quite the show – simultaneously some the most serious topics we’ve ever talked about mixed with trademark Danger wit. A must listen.

Angel Blue wins the 2013 ACW American Joshi Queen of Queens

Angel Blue ACWIn last week’s Roundup, I made a prediction that either Angel Blue or Barbi Hayden would win Anarchy Championship Wrestling‘s American Joshi Queen of Queens, ultimately choosing Hayden to be the victor. As it turns out, he prediction for the final was right, but my selection of winner was incorrect, as it was Angel Blue who took the tournament, and also secured the Anarchy Televised Title in the process – making her a double champion, as she is also one half of the Tag Team Champions.

With thanks to ACW and IndyFanatics‘ tweets, here are the results from the show in Austin, TX last night:

Quarter finals
1. Angel Blue defeated Addy Starr
2. Leva Bates beat Angelus Layne
3. Athena retained the Anarchy Televised Championship by defeating Claudia del Solis
4. Barbi Hayden bested Su Yung
Semi finals
5. Angel Blue beat Leva Bates
6. Barbi Hayden defeated Athena to win the Anarchy Televised Championship
Final
7. Angel Blue bested Barbi Hayden to win the American Joshi Queen of Queens tournament and the Anarchy Televised Championship. (more…)

Fight Like A Girl: Angelus Layne

Angelus

This weekend, Angelus Layne is one of the entrants in the 2013 version of ACW‘s Queen of Queens tournament – a big opportunity for this Midwest grappler who has been having a very productive 2013 so far. With that in mind, Stew caught up with Angelus for what was *in theory* meant to be a quick chat – but soon turned into a near podcast length discussion.

We talked Queen of Queens (and who she’s got her eye on in that tournament), getting advice from former QoQ winner Rachel Summerlyn, representing St Louis Anarchy and the fun times she’s had there (including working against babyface Jessicka Havok earlier in the year). We discuss working for AIW in Ohio (debuting at the last minute at Girls Night Out 8 earlier this year), and wrestling Darkness Crabtree for Wrestling Is Intense. We also have an in-depth discussion of hairstyles (yes, really), WWE hiring practices, social media, dig out a couple of comic book references and Angelus tells the story of “The Curse of July” and how it killed her chance to appear at NCW: Femmes Fatales last year.

Episode 52 with AIW Promoter John Thorne

This Friday, Absolute Intense Wrestling brings their Girls Night Out franchise to iPPV via Smart Mark Video – so we’ve invited one of the AIW owner/promoters John Thorne onto the show to explain exactly why you should consider paying $14.99 of your hard earned cash on the show. We talk preparations for the show on the final week, Taylor Made‘s late pull-out and the addition of Addy Starr, the idea of iPPV (and whose idea it was) and the financial state of the company. We go back to the early days of GNO and talk about how important Hailey Hatred was to getting the first show off the ground, favourite shows so far, and how they’ve improved through each event. We talk the current status of former AIW Women’s Champions Mickie Knuckles and Jessicka Havok, touch on an AIW Women’s Champion who never was, and the 2012 ascent of Allysin Kay and Mia Yim to the main event – including the amazing finish to their Steel Cage match last August. We discuss the Indiegogo campaign to get Athena to GNO 7 last year, and John offers his opinion on some of the WSU/Drew Cordeiro twitter-drama from last week, and touches on an aborted GNO/WSU invasion/merger angle. We talk Allysin Kay’s mystery opponent for Friday (and maybe get a hint…), the formation of The Social Network and help give the final push for the iPPV on Friday. Some really interesting insight here from someone who was anything but a women’s wrestling fan a few years ago.

Ringbelles Roundup (5 June 2012)

Pro Wrestling: EVE has officially announced a show on July 14 in Sudbury, UK, calling it a “special edition” show which will feature the debut of TNA’s Winter – who is a German-born Briton – and two returns – we have strong suspicions on who the returns will be – as well as “one time only” and “must see” matches.

In its press release that it released to Diva Dirt, EVE also points out that running a weekend of shows without iPPV would have “hurt EVE financially and potentially risk the company due to the restricted income without iPPV”. That’s a telling statement – which actually PRECEDED the announcement of Winter being part of the show – and implies that financially, EVE is lean at the moment.

The show will also feature three men’s contests, making it a split show of sorts. It claims it will draw the fans of the men’s promotions and give them a taste of women’s wrestling at the same time. It’s the same ethos that led to having the Jenny Sjodin v Alpha Female match at the London charity show in April, which is where Alpha won the title.

In theory, this makes sense – draw non-women’s wrestling fans in with what they are familiar with and then give them a taste of EVE’s product while they’re there. However, there is also the possibility of it dissuading EVE fans who may not be interested in the men’s matches. There is the possibility that the ones there for EVE won’t be hugely taken with the men’s contests, as that’s not what they’ve paid to see, and vice versa for the fans of the guys.

SHIMMER volumes 47 & 48 results – title changes (now updated with live observations)

It’s day two of the SHIMMER tapings in Berwyn, IL (you can find out the results, thoughts and photos from yesterday’s DVD tapings by clicking here), and a number of matches have been announced.

After defeating both Canadian Ninjas in singles matches yesterday, Cheerleader Melissa defends her SHIMMER Championship against Jessie McKay, aware that Sweet Saraya has apparently put a bounty on her head.

Elsewhere, the Tag Team Championship will be on the line as holders Ayako Hamada and Ayumi Kurihara defend against high-fliers Ray and Leon in an all-joshi affair, Mercedes Martinez takes on Hailey Hatred, and the unlikely team of Sara Del Rey and Courtney Rush will meet ReGeneration XAllison Danger & Leva Bates.

As with yesterday, we will be adding the results to this post as they happen, and Stew will offer his thoughts from ringside later. Click after the jump and keep hitting refresh to follow the goings-on. (more…)
