It’s that time of year again.

March is almost upon us, and women’s wrestling in North America is coming out of hibernation, all invigorated, revived and ready to unleash a shedload of matches upon us, the wrestling fan. Coming up later this month, we have nCw Femmes Fatales and SHIMMER, as well as matches in promotions like POWW, AIW, RCW, NWA Houston, NWA Ring Warriors and more, but we start off on the east coast this Saturday with Women Superstars Uncensored’s 5th Year Anniversary in Deer Park, NY…

Among some of the undercard matches worth noting include two J-Cup qualifiers for April featuring Annie Social against April Hunter and Leva Bates meeting Athena in a rematch from last year’s WSU Anniversary show – which was won by Athena with her O-Face top rope stunner. Elsewhere, Lexxus pulls double duty for the second iPPV in a row when she faces rival Rain in a singles battle, but also has to select a new Tag Team Championship partner to face Jana and Luscious Latasha, after her Boston Shore teammate Amber bowed out of wrestling because of “personal demons” – a phrase which wrestling fans are ever so familiar with. In addition, the former Tag Team Champions Marti Belle and Tina San Antonio do battle after months of circling around each other in a storyline that actually began a year ago when Tina was “attacked” before the 4th Anniversary, only for it to come out months later as being a big fake, while Belle chose Jazz as a partner to win the vacant championships.

The big undercard contest pits two thirds of the Midwest Militia – Sassy Stephie and Allysin Kay – meeting Brittney Savage and Alicia in a continuance from their War Games match at Breaking Barriers 2 last November, but the figureheads of both the Militia and Team WSU are the meat and potatoes of the show.

Despite having a number of long running storylines coming to a head on the undercard, this is really a one match show as far as the marketing is concerned – WSU Champion Mercedes Martinez taking on Spirit Champion Jessicka Havok in a title for title match, which has been at least 14 months in the making… at least, that’s when Havok made it clear that she was coming for the title after disposing of Rain and her former army. She made her intentions known after putting away Nikki Roxx at The Final Chapter last January, though her run towards the top of the card started months previously when she returned to WSU.

From mid-2010, Havok has successfully put away every single opponent that has come her way in singles competition. ODB, Amber O’Neal, Roxx, Alicia, Rain and more have stepped up to take her on and failed to defeat her, racking up an impressing undefeated streak in the singles ranks. Without a doubt, the Spirit Champ – a title she won last September – has more momentum ahead of challenging Martinez than anyone else in the WSU Champion’s near-three year reign.

However, as pointed out, Mercedes has held the WSU Championship for close to 36 full months, and has been made the woman to beat in the promotion, seeing off challenges from the likes of Alicia, Angel Orsini, Serena Deeb, Lexxus and more. In doing so, there is now a level of prestige and grandeur surrounding the title that will give whoever defeats her the best springboard. Undoubtedly, Martinez has done wonders for that belt.

Having said that, this match almost didn’t happen, as Martinez suffered a legitimate concussion and stinger in the War Games match, and needed to be taken to hospital immediately following the show. Barred from flying, she was unable to travel to New Jersey for WSU’s first matches of the year, where she was supposed to defend the WSU belt against Jennifer Cruz, and has only wrestled matches in her home state of Florida in WXW, mostly against Kimberley Maddox. However, she has been given the all clear for air travel and will be in Long Island for WSU’s biggest card of the year, and possibly most important card ever.

Many are expecting this to be Havok’s time, taking the promotion’s top title and establishing herself as the top woman. However, Mercedes has won over and over again when pundits expected her to lose, so it would be unwise to write this off as being a foregone conclusion. Either way, WSU has banked everything on this match being a success, and I am confident that it will be. However, will it be Jessicka Havok or Mercedes Martinez unifying WSU’s singles championships by the end of Saturday night? You’ll have to buy the iPPV on GoFightLive to find out. We will have a review of the show on the website after everything is said and done.

Lady JoJo’s been repackaged in OVW to Josette Bynum – her real name. She’s the new heel “talent arbitrator” in the promotion, filling the role left by Christian Mascagni, who was legitimately fired by the promotion after being al over the TV show over the last few months. The reason Bynum got the role is because she and Mascagni legitimately disliked each other – something he revealed in a podcast last year – so the appointment is supposed to spite him. She is also the manager of his former stablemates Jessie Godderz, Mohamad Ali Vaez, Rob Terry and Rudy Switchblade.
