In the week leading up to the three nights of action, there had been a lot of buzz concerning the event. With joshi talent from a number of different promotions in Japan, female wrestling there had largely stopped (Ice Ribbon carried on as normal, and WAVE also held a card), as many of the top stars had crossed the Pacific and international datelines to wrestling in Philadelphia, PA, Everett, MA and Manhattan, NY for the CHIKARA promoted cards.

The shows main focus – other than showing off some of the great Japanese female talent – seemed to be to provide a platform for CHIKARA talent Sara Del Rey, who won both of her main events against her idol Aja Kong on night one – in a match that she reportedly dominated – and against Ayako Hamada on night 3 in a match which was said to be equal to (or greater than) their SHIMMER volume 28 outing two years ago. Considering Hamada was brought in as a late replacement for the injured Meiko Satomura, she made a strong impression, and also showed TNA what they missed out on by having this woman on its roster, not using her, mismanaging her and letting her go.

It was asked if Del Rey’s three victories meant she was the only person to go undefeated over the weekend. She wasn’t, as GAMI also went through the weekend without defeat, but Sara’s accomplishments are the ones which should be the most important. After a subdued end to CHIKARA’s season – defeating the BDK’s ring announcer turned wrestler Jakob Hammermeier at High Noon last month – it really puts Del Rey on a pedestal as being not just one of the best female wrestlers in the world, but possibly the best wrestler of any gender. Considering the shows are likely to be seen in Japan, Del Rey’s accomplishments over the weekend could put her in a great position to wrestle more often in Japan in 2012, as many promotions may be interested in booking the woman who dominated and defeated Aja Kong.

Elsewhere, Kaori Yoneyama made her US debut (and presumable farewell) before retiring in December 23, winning two and losing one, while Toshie Uematsu also made what is likely to be her final US appearance before her retirement next spring, including teaming with the Batiri and adopting their unique and striking makeup. Manami Toyota – who was one of the brainchildren of JoshiMania – went 2-1 for the weekend and strengthened her relationship with CHIKARA – a promotion which she has credited with helping her rediscover her fire. You can see the other results below, or by clicking here, here and here for nights 1-3.

Unfortunately, we were not able to be there in person, much like many others. After all, with the events taking place in the run-up to Christmas, it can be expensive to travel to the venues, as well as get hotel rooms, money for food, tickets and merchandise. However, attendance numbers appear to have been good (night 2 seems to have been a bit quieter), though the shows should make an absolute killing on DVD. I ordered them all within half an hour of them becoming available, and know of many others have done so too. If you have limited experience of joshi, these DVDs would be a great way to dip your toe into the water. If you’re a longtime fan, this will be a unique experience to see legends, future stars and North American wrestlers in the same ring. If you need some convincing before buying them, we will be reviewing them as soon as we can slap them into the DVD player.
