A bumper two weeks of women’s wrestling kicks off this weekend with SHIMMER: Women Athletes undertaking two days of DVD tapings for volumes 41-44. With close to 40 wrestlers expected to compete over the weekend, fans have got 12 hours of debuts, returns, twists, turns and top quality wrestling to look forward to in Berwyn, IL.

As mentioned, there will be a number of new faces at the tapings, the most publicised is the current SMASH Divas Champion Kana. The 30-year old took the title earlier this month by beating rival Serena Deeb, ending her seven match undefeated streak, and avenging the two pinfall losses to her gaijin opponent. In addition to wrestling at SHIMMER, Kana will also compete in CHIKARA the following weekend against current SHIMMER Champion Madison Eagles, and former titleholder Sara Del Rey.

Current JWP Openweight Champion Hailey Hatred returns to the US to wrestle for the first time at SHIMMER on October 1 before going on to Absolute Intense Wrestling the following day to take on Cherry Bomb. Arguably the most successful non-Japanese female wrestling talent to ever compete in Japan, Hatred had an absolute slew of titles in her possession, and was criminally left out of the PWI Female 50 this year, because the magazine does not recognise wrestling from Japan or Mexico.

Yumi Ohka’s debut has been slightly overshadowed by Kana’s arrival, but she will be unlikely to accept being looked past. A member of Misaki Ohata’s Black Dahlia group in WAVE, 32-year old Ohka has been wrestling for close to a decade after originally lacing up the boots to migrate into the acting industry, though elected to stay wrestling instead. She could be the sleeper star of the weekend.

SHIMMER Academy graduate Veda Scott follows in the footsteps of Jamilia Craft, Jessie “Bonesaw” Brooks and Mia Yim in earning a spot in the promotion. The dogtooth-wearing redhead made a good first impression at AIW’s Girls Night Out 4 this summer in her match with Cherry Bomb, and caused a heart-stopping moment when her head collided with the ringpost in a move which left many spectators wondering if she was dead. Fortunately, no major damage was done, and it made for one hell of a dramatic (improvised) ending.

Finally, there’s West Coast debutant Davina Rose, who has tangled with a number of SHIMMER mainstays such as Sara Del Rey, Allison Danger and Amazing Kong, as well as being given tutelage by Serena Deeb. She comes into the promotion with a decent amount of fanfare and expectations, and could skyrocket her name with a number of good showings.

Speaking of which, five women who made a great first impression are returning for another bite of the cherry. Christina Von Eerie caused a splash straight away by being beaten backstage by Del Rey then beating her via count out in her debut. She fell to Del Rey’s Royal Butterfly on volume 38, but she had established herself as a force, and is expected to achieve again on volumes 41-44.

Courtney Rush and Mena Libra cemented themselves during their debut against each other on volume 37. Libra got the win with her Ambassador Bridge finisher, but not before suffering some of the biggest suplexes the Eagles Club had ever seen – including one back suplex where she was folded up like a deckchair. With her swagger, look and demeanour, Rush was a big hit, and is a big prospect in her native Canada.

And then there was the Knight Dynasty.

Nobody has ever had a debut like Britani and Saraya. Baiting fans, making threats, shouting loud and generally being an utter nuisance, the mother and daughter combination owned the building when they were out there – so much so that they were spat at, a rarity in clued-up wrestling fans. Expect more of the same antics this weekend.

Since the previous tapings wrapped back in late March, a number of SHIMMER talents have travelled the world honing their craft. Mia Yim and Serena Deeb are probably the two who have the most stamps in their passport, making numerous trips to Japan for REINA and SMASH respectively, while Deeb has also wrestled in Puerto Rico for the World Wrestling Council. Portia Perez, Nicole Matthews and Sara Del Rey have also travelled to Japan for REINA, and Mercedes Martinez made the trip to compete in the Queen Of Stardom tournament, falling to Nanae Takahashi. In addition, Matthews has also gone to Australia to compete for the SHIMMER championship against Eagles and Jessie McKay in PWWA, and traded wins with Eagles in the subsequent days at a festival in the country. While we’re on about Australia, there’s also Kellie Skater, who is the proverbial nomad, making trips to Canada, Japan and various promotions in the US such as nCw: Femmes Fatales, REINA, IndyGurlz, Women Superstars Uncensored and more.

A number of talking points still exist after March. As it pertains to the championship, titleholder Madison Eagles is slowly descending into madness as her obsession with keeping hold of the belt grows stronger. At times, she seems like Gollum with his ‘precious’ or Stone Cold Steve Austin during the summer of 2001 trying to hold onto the WWF Championship, and it makes her matches even more engrossing, as you know that she will fight with her final breath to keep hold of the title that justifies her existence. She doesn’t cheat – in fact, she hasn’t since she won the #1 contender match over Cheerleader Melissa on volume 30 – but is so overbearing with her own praise for herself that it makes her hated by the crowd.

Ah yes, Melissa. The woman who is fighting to get back to the top of the heap so she can earn another shot at the SHIMMER title that she so desperately wants. She had a shot at it and failed, and is starting from scratch to get another crack at Eagles. Expect her to continue that run at the belt, and expect Eagles to grow more and more paranoid and fearful as Melissa edges closer to another opportunity.

The other big story arc is the ongoing feud between Serena Deeb and Portia Perez. Both have traded shady wins – Portia made Serena pass out from the Just Facelock after pulling her away from the ropes while the ref was distracted by Nicole Matthews, while Deeb pinned Perez on volume 40 even though Portia’s foot was on the ropes – so it is likely that they will clash again to decide who is the better woman. I have my own theories on what will happen, but I’ll keep it to myself so I don’t jinx things.

SHIMMER promoter Dave Prazak is traditionally keeping his cards close to his chest, but is assuring us we’ll see them by the end of Sunday:

The whole crew is looking forward to this weekend’s events, as it’s honestly the strongest talent lineup we’ve ever had for a set of tapings. The list speaks for itself. We’re not officially announcing anything in advance other than who will be appearing, and even that isn’t a complete list. There will be additional surprises. Anyone who has been following our product closely can sort of predict some of the matches that will take place on this set of shows based on existing rivalries, but part of what I like about the live appeal of SHIMMER tapings is the “mystery factor” heading into our shows. Since we’ve built a strong enough following to fill the venue in advance without needing to advertise anything except a partial talent list, we have the opportunity to create a unique live atmosphere where the fans in attendance don’t know who is going to come through the curtain next.

The action kicks off the night before at AAW at the Eagles Club with former SHIMMER Champion MsChif teaming with former Tag Team Champion Nevaeh and McKay to take on Eagles, Sassy Stephie and Mena Libra in a precursor to the weekend. The Ringbelles team will be there to cover the results and give you our thoughts, so keep an eye on the website over the weekend and into next week, as we will be looking to suffocate you with news, interviews and videos.

While we update you with the week’s news here in the Roundup, it’s worth liking our Facebook page and following us on Twitter, as we post thoughts and content exclusively on there, so don’t miss out on video links, photos and thoughts that you may not see on here. Plus, we’re setting up a competition soon to give away original prints of SHIMMER volumes 3 and 4. Get involved with the chat.
