After withdrawing from CHIKARA and moving back to Australia, many would have expected SHIMMER and PWWA Champion Madison Eagles to rest up her injured shoulder and prepare herself for the return of PWWA on September 3 for her next SHIMMER title defence against both Nicole Matthews and former tag team partner Jessie McKay.

But this is Madison Eagles we’re talking about. This is the woman who perforated her eardrum during her #1 contenders’ match against Cheerleader Melissa in SHIMMER and came back the next day to wrestle MsChif and win the title. This is the woman who fractured her wrist and elbow last year and carried on training through it. This is the woman who had racked her shoulder up in a car accident in April and still went balls to the wall against Courtney Rush at nCw Femmes Fatales VI less than two months later.

So when she returned unannounced to her home fed of PWA in Liverpool, Australia on Friday after living in the US for six months, she wasn’t there to stand and wave at the fans. Instead, she turned heel by kicking Jessie McKay in the face and delivering a Hellbound (Death Valley Driver over the knee) to Robbie Eagles, setting the stall for the SHIMMER title match Before the turn, it would have been heel Matthews against babyfaces McKay and Eagles. Now, the pressure is on Everybody’s Favourite Girlfriend, who has her longtime SHIMMER rival in Matthews, and former tag team partner and regular opponent Eagles gunning for her.

The speculation over this match has been pretty great, partly because this is the first SHIMMER title match to be sanctioned outside of the US and is the first in a good couple of years that won’t take place in Berwyn, but also because of the physical state of Eagles.

Our 6’1” champion returned to Australia because it is easier to get treatment and rehab for that injured shoulder. It has led many to speculate just how injured that shoulder is. Will she be healthy for the SHIMMER DVD tapings in October? If she won’t – or even if there is a slight chance that she won’t – is this match set up for her to drop the championship? After all, MsChif wasn’t really on the radar for the title win when she took the belt from Sara Del Rey on volume 18, and Eagles herself was a shock winner when she beat The Boss on volume 31. With surprise switches not uncommon in the promotion, could we see McKay shake off that “Diva” moniker that Matthews has purported her to be and prove she is a worthy SHIMMER titleholder? Or on the other hand, does Matthews go from being Portia Perez’s original lackey (of sorts) to equal in the Canadian Ninjas, to surpassing her to get to the top before her tag team partner?

Should either McKay or Matthews win, there is a ready made feud against the other that is still bubbling, regardless of their numerous wars in SHIMMER over the past year or so. With the added spice of the belt being on the line, there is no reason why this can’t headline any volume, or have any number of stipulations added to it. Both of them can go, both have the right attitude and both could be seen as worthy SHIMMER Champions.

However, let’s not look past Eagles. She hasn’t wrestled in more than a month and has been healing up – albeit not as quickly or as successfully as she would have hoped – and has another two months of treatment ahead of her before the PWWA show. With a good three months of rest, recovery and rehab, could she be healthy enough to wrestler a triple threat match where the load is lessened because of the number of bodies involved? And if she is, she still has another month after that before the SHIMMER tapings. Four months of recovery with one match to break it up seems like a decent calculated risk, if her shoulder is healing of its own accord and doesn’t require surgery.

And as a side note, where does self-proclaimed PWWA Champion KC Cassidy fit in? She took it upon herself to call herself the champ and carry the belt around in Eagles absence. Does she feel like she deserves to be up there with fellow Aussie stars Eagles and McKay in title matches and main events? McKay’s vowed to rescue the title and win it fairly (for once, as she’s usually a heel in Australia), so could Cassidy want to throw out a banana peel for McKay so she doesn’t leave PWWA on September 3 as the SHIMMER Champion?

Whatever happens, it’s a very intriguing setup for a groundbreaking contest. The show takes place at the Liverpool Masonic Centre, and will also feature Cassidy, Kellie Skater, Shazza McKenzie, and New Zealand stars Evie, Megan-Kate and Britenay.
