Hamada vs Kurihara made official for SHIMMER this Saturday
As part of an appearance on Dave Lagana‘s “Promote This!” podcast today, Dave Prazak & Allison Danger exclusively announced a match for this weekend’s SHIMMER tapings in Berwyn, IL, and it’s a dream match.
Although Vol 35 on September 12th (which was headlined by a “SHIMvivor Series” elimination match pitting Serena Deeb, Cheerleader Melissa, Ayako Hamada & Ayumi Kurihara against the team of Madison Eagles, Sara Del Rey, Daizee Haze & Tomoka Nakagawa) has yet to be released on DVD, those in attendance will have witnessed the aftermath, when a respectful Kurihara threw out a challenge in broken English to joshi legend Ayako Hamada both for in Japan and back in SHIMMER. Hamada accepted.
Three months later on December 12th, on the Kurihara produced show to mark her five year anniversary in the wrestling business, Ayumi teamed with her generation rival Tomoka Nakagawa to take on Hamada and her longtime partner AKINO (who was actually one of Ayumi’s initial trainers at M’s Style). In just over half an hour of action, and with Kurihara working her second bout of the night (she had earlier competed as her masked alter ego A*YU*MI in a mixed tag where she teamed with Ultimo Dragon), an overflow crowd of 600 at Shinjuku Face saw Kurihara fall in defeat to AKINO’s Tornado-A.
Kurihara and Hamada have faced off in singles action before, and below you can watch a match from almost exactly two years ago for the WAVE promotion in Japan. However, the Ayumi Kurihara of 2011 is a far different proposition to the Ayumi of 2009, having developed into what Dave Prazak referred to on the “Promote This!” show as “this current generation’s true superstar.” This Saturday, for the first time ever in the US, SHIMMER will give us a generational dream match between Ayako Hamada and Ayumi Kurihara. Be there. General admission tickets still available at SHIMMERwrestling.com
